Google Hates Me: Closing Google Reader

There are very few people as dependent on Google Reader as myself. Google knows that. No, really, they do, they know I am like the top top user of Google Reader. I switched to it in 2007 from Bloglines and never looked back. Now what am I going to do?

Google announced last night that they are closing Google Reader July 1, 2013. That is about 8 years since it first launched.

Why are they killing it? Google offered two reasons, "usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we're pouring all of our energy into fewer products."

The real reason? They are personally targeting me. Okay, I am kidding but it terribly affects me, which may impact you - my readers. I'll figure out something else to use in the meantime.

You know how I found out about this? I was on a flight, I open Google Reader (last night) and I see this warning:

I almost yelled out on the plane!

The next thing I am worried about is Google killing FeedBurner, which is what so much of the RSS web is run off of these days. Yes, including this site.

I am so sad.

You have to understand, I consume more news than most people. Here are my stats, note that it stops at 300,000 because it is not normal to go beyond that:

I have a list of alternatives i'll be investigating, specifically Newsblur, recommended by Gary Price, once it gets through the growing pains of everyone trying to migrate off Google Reader and onto Newsblur.

Panda: What Happened To Fixing The Scraper Issue?

Wasn't the whole point of the scraper algorithm and the continued Panda updates about making sure quality original sourced content ranks in Google and now stolen/scraped content?

It seems like recently Google is back to where they started from prior to February 2011 (maybe I am being a bit harsh) when it comes to scrapers outranking the original source.

A Threadwatch thread by Aaron Wall cites how a story that cost The Verge $5,000 to put together is not ranking in the first position for the story name in either Google web search or Google News.

The article is over here but when you search for [death of the american arcade] in Google, the number one web result is tomwoods.com and the only Google News listing is from the king of content generation, Huffington Post. What is going on here?

I actually asked Google about this a week or two ago, still no response, for a story on Search Engine Land. Search for an article Danny just wrote a few days ago named Google Launches Streamlined Image Search. Google doesn't rank it anywhere on the first page of the web results for a search on the title. It does happen to rank in Google News.

"Google Zebra" Google New Update Coming Soon

After hitting by Panda and Penguin Upates google is going to hit by a new update i.e Google Zebra.

This is being annouced by google recently and it is basically hit the SMO part.

As we already Know about Google Panda And Penguin they hit SEO Service very soon and updates regular basis.

Panda hit on-site elements. Penguin mainly focused on off-site issues. Zebra is going to town on social...

Too many retweets with keywords included around a link
Facebook updates with too many shares from people not in your industry
Any Google+ shares as this will look spammy (Google+ is a graveyard right, so any activity looks suspicious?!)
Owning a Pinterest page - brands only use these for SEO benefit no?

Google: 224 Million 'Bad Ads' Disabled in 2012

Once again, the Google AdWords team has reported on its continued efforts to eliminate bad AdWords ads. This year, they've released an infographic (see below) that recounts all they have done over the past year to reduce the number of bad ads that appeared in the AdWords network.
Citing that Google's business "depends on keeping people safe and secure," the infographic identifies how the search giant defines "bad ads", how they discover them, and what they do once they find them.
By the numbers:
  • 224 million: The number of banned ads.
  • 889,000: The number of advertisers banned.
  • 223: The number of countries and territories where bad advertisers originated from – the U.S., China, Japan, and India were the biggest offenders.
  • 78: The number of languages used by abused in bad ad attempts Scots Gaelic, Kyrgyz, Tatar, and Esperanto were particularly troublesome.
The rest of the infographic contains horn-tooting numbers to give law-abiding advertisers and consumers the warm-and-fuzzies. Their AdWords blog post closes stating Google's "zero-tolerance" policy for bad ads and reiterates commitment to do "whatever it takes" to keep the web – and Google users and advertisers – as safe as possible.
Google's commitment to reducing "bad ads" isn't a new resolution for 2013. In previous years, the AdWords team has gone through what they call "bad ads" to weed them out in an effort to protect consumers and "legitimate businesses in harm's way." Google's ad team has gone through multiple iterations of taking extra procautions to keep ads safe.

SEO For Facebook Graph Search? Facebook Has Some Tips

Facebook Graph Search could eventually become a fairly effective local search/recommendations engine. Here are a couple things to know before we get to Facebook’s visibility tips:

Although it’s only available to a limited number of users at first, Facebook Graph Search will be offering local search from day one. It was discussed in some detail during today’s live announcement.
Search results, Facebook says, will be created by a combination of information created/shared by the business (Pages) and connections of the person doing the search (friends, likes, check-ins, etc.).
Having a Facebook Page for your business will surely help (a lot), but it’s not required — businesses may show up if customers or someone else has added them as a “place.”

That last point is important because it’s possible to be listed as a “place” in Facebook without having a Page. Larkin Building in Buffalo, NY, is one good example — if you click, you’ll notice more than 20 “likes” and 500+ check-ins for this place.

Facebook says that its new search bar will return “the top search suggestions, including people, Pages, apps, places, groups, and suggested searches” — notice how “Pages” and “places” are listed separately.
Facebook’s SEO Tips For Graph Search

Facebook’s new search will let users do searches like “italian restaurants that my friends have been to” (which means Facebook check-ins are a signal) and “hair salons that my friends like” (which means having a Page that people “like” is a signal), along with the more basic “hotels near the Space Needle” kind of local search.

The business Page is what a small/local business can control the most, and Facebook’s three specific tips for business owners, then, are focused on optimizing a Page for the new search (and this is straight from their post):

The name, category, vanity URL, and information you share in the “About” section all help people find your business and should be shared on Facebook.
If you have a location or a local place Page, update your address to make sure you can appear as a result when someone is searching for a specific location.
Focus on attracting the right fans to your Page and on giving your fans a reason to interact with your content on an ongoing basis.

As I pointed out in my earlier article, Web searches with Bing’s search results may also be used if Facebook needs to find additional content not in its graph — just as it’s been doing for a while now. Bing has written a post with more on that, and a screenshot of how its search results will show in the new Facebook search experience.

No doubt that, as the new Facebook search becomes more widely available in the coming months, some SEOs and social media marketers will do their best to figure out how to gain visibility in the results. But for now, Facebook’s own tips are a good reminder of how to use Pages to promote a business in the Facebook ecosystem.
